Missing officeLR.cab file during Office 2007 install
Had a stupid problem last two days with the installation of Office 2007 SBE on a brand new Dell laptop. For a reason I won’t bore you with I had to rebuild from scratch the Vista install and then reinstall Office 2007 using the OEM disk I received from Dell. The install would fail just after inputting the serial number just as the install process began, with the error message:
“Setup cannot find Office.en-us\OfficeLR.cab. Browse to a valid installation source, and then click OK.”
This file does exist on the CD but pointing the installation to the correct location doesn’t work.
There are various solutions dotted round the internet: Google “OfficeLR.cab” -torrent, but none of them seem to do the trick for me. These include:
- Copying the office CD to a local folder and installing from there – simply didn’t work for me;
- Cleaning the CD as it could be damaged – didn’t work and nor did the 5 other identical disks I have;
- Copying the files in the cab to the same folder (after following solution 1) – once again, no joy.
So the easy solution, which I wish I’d thought of hours ago, is to download the trial version of the relevant Office suite and install that – in my case found here http://trial.trymicrosoftoffice.com/trialukireland/product.aspx?sku=3082936 but I’m sure with a bit of googling for your product and country you’ll find the correct trial version. Well, it’s nearly the easy solution, because when I tried to install that package I got this message: “The installation of this package failed”. A typically helpful error message there from Microsoft. A quick google later (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926946) and I try doing this:
Self-Extractor_filename.exe /extract:”C:\Office2007″
Which doesn’t work either. However, it does work on my own PC running XP SP3. Once the files were extracted I copied them to the laptop and ran the Setup.exe and the trial installed correctly. Then I used the original serial number to convert the trial to the full version and it worked! Interestingly, but probably unsurprisingly, the trial version looks very similar once unpacked to the original CD and it has the officeLR.cab file. Luckily no error message with the trial.
I did try the originally installer CD on my desktop PC and it ran fine. So I don’t understand why this error occurs on Vista – any ideas? Perhaps something to do with the Windows Installer on Vista? Anybody?

Installing it in VISTA, i had the same problem too! So i downgraded to XP and flawlessly installed it. I had a vista headache.

Neon – I agree, Vista can be hard work. Basically relearning all the things you knew how to do on XP, and then having additional headaches to boot. For seemingly little benefit as well!
Same probs here on XP Pro SP2 – except I’m installing from a network share with all the files where they are supposed to be with all the setup options inbuilt in a msp file and have used this share heaps of times – only occurring on this one laptop.

JUST RENAME THE FOLDER “MSOCache” (C:\MSOCache) AS MSOCache1 AND TRY TO INSTALL OFFICE 2007.

I had the same problem installing office2007 on windows7 pro. Tried the proposed solutions with no luck. Finally traced it down to bad ram.
The folder name change method worked properly for me. I’m on a Win XP sp3 system. Thanks very much for the helpful post.

oh ya i have the same problem, i m installing MS office7 in windows xp, on installing i put the key code, aftr that problem cam office.en-us\ officeLR.cab. file missing.What the Hell it is. Ok as per the above suggestion of one friend i will try to download
the trial version and install with the serial no. of the full version. Oh!! god help me to install office 7.OR i will first try to rename the file MSO Cache to MSO Cache1 as per one frd has suggested above. Really a good ” HEADACHE”,
generally these types of problem are good time consuming and also a good time pass.

‘Setup cannot find Office.en-us\OfficeLR.cab. Browse to a valid installation source, and then click OK’ when I tried to install Ofc 2007. I renamed the MSOcache folder as suggested. I guess I am having a huge brain cramp because is this the folder I am supposed to ‘browse’ to and then click OK. I browsed to the new MSOcache1 folder but it said that was invalid. What am I doing wrong. How am I supposed to know what installation folder to browse to in the first darn place???? I run WinXP SP3 on a Dell desktop. I currently have Ofc 2000.
I have had OFC 2007 for months and decided to install today and not happy.

Hi Terri, have you tried downloading a compatible trial version and using data from that as suggested? I’ve not tried the renaming method listed in the comments so I can’t tell you in which circumstances that will work or not.

i have installed also from CD sourse but it shows error Officelr.cab file and when i give location , it said it is not valid location…so the solution i find that which file like officelr.cab copy from resource and paste it into c:/msocashe/and paste it into last folder which is modified by last and then give location to the resource office folder where u r installing the office.

I think it’s another way for them to get money out of our pockets. It’s funny that everyone is having a problem with this when the software should be compatable with the computers. I am having the same problem and even when I downloaded the trail version it did the same thing to me again.
i am not computer savy.. i have the same problem as above and i would like to fin out where the c:/msocashe is to change it. i am very frustrated, if anyone is kind enough to walk me thur it step by step explaining where i can find these links, i would greatly appriciate it.
Hello everyone, I was able to get past the error by deleting the MSOCACHE file but now I’m getting a similar error for the Outlook application. It is looking for Outlklr.cab file. Arrrgh

The Cab file may be corrupted. To test if the file is corrupted, try to open the cab file and view the folders. If you cannot open the cab file, it is corrupted. Some people claim you can fix the corruption by cleaning the CD but if you cannot, then you need to replace it. Cab file are EXTREMELY sensitive and when you burn from an original program disc to other discs, they can become easily corrupted.
I had this error that office could not find the officelr.cab file and when I realized that the file was on the disc but could not be opened, I replaced it with a new one downloaded from the link below and was able to install office.

Simple Solution.
During any error message, when you install ofiice, just wait and go back to C:\msochach and delete the folder.
Its work like a charm.

I almost saw hell trying to install office 2007 on windows 7. I finally got the solution. Just download OfficeLR.cab,then copy it and paste on the folder Office.en-us found on the office 2007 installation suite. It works. Just give it a try.
could not find mso cache…help me
I had same problem. It was due to long file location in the file system (In my case Desktop) and this is why system can’t find files. Try to locate MS Office installation files directly on C:/ drive. This worked for me.
